BOMBER RULES  2006-2011

1. INTRODUCTION

A. NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OR SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATIONS OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS.

B. It is the responsibility of the driver of the car to see that his/her car completely satisfies the rules, including but not limited to all safety rules. The driver of each car represents to the promoter and all others that his/her car has satisfied all applicable rules, including but not limited to safety rules, whenever such driver participates in warm-up, practice or competitive laps.

2. INTENT

A. BOMBER CLASS is intended to be an entry-level division to allow novice competitors an opportunity to sample stock car racing and gain on track experience. A driver in this class should tolerate some contact as entry level racing. However, blocking, intentional bumping, and violent lane changes are not acceptable and will be governed by the flagman.

3. COMPETING MODELS  - NEW RULE CHANGE

1)  limited to 1960-1986 American or Canadian passenger cars or long box pickups. Minimum wheelbase is 116”, four door only, 117” two door or four door (as produced, no altering).

4. GENERAL BODY REQUIREMENTS

A. General:

1) Bodies must be steel.
2)  shall have all body parts to race. Specifically: Hood, roof, trunk lid, all doors, fenders, quarter panels, floor pan, stock trunk floor, front and rear bumpers. The hood can be removed if damaged in race.
3) All breakable material should be removed, that is outer body trim, door handles, hood ornaments, glass or plastic lenses and no rearview mirrors. Remove all flammable material.
4) Clean underside of car of unused brackets and protruding bolts.

B. Interiors:

1) Inner body panels are to remain intact with the exception of dash, front inner fenders, and inner door panels. "A" pillar and door jams are not to be gutted

C. Overall Car Weight:

1) No weight requirements.

5. DETAILED BODY REQUIREMENTS

A. Windshields:

1) Full windshield is mandatory and shall be OEM stock glass or lexon.
2) Windshields are subject to the windshield strap requirement.

B. Rear View Mirror:

1) No mirrors allowed.

C. Firewalls:

1) Front firewall must be sealed with 20 gauge metal. No holes.

D. Doors:

1) Doors shall be welded or bolted shut.

E. Hood:

1) Hood must have inner panels removed.

F. Rear Deck Lids:

1) Trunk lid can also have inner panel removed.

G. Bumpers and Rear Filler Panel:

1) Bumpers are to remain in original position, but may be reinforced within stock appearing guidelines.
2) Must be strapped, capped, or rolled to reduce cut tires and hooking other cars.
3) Suggest bumper straps to be minimum 1/8"x3" material, welded or bolted with carriage bolts. No pop rivets.

6. GENERAL ENGINE REQUIREMENTS

A. Engine shall be manufacturer to manufacturer, year available in car.

7. DETAILED ENGINE REQUIREMENTS

A. Engine Location:

1) Shall be mount in stock position
2) Engine tin must be stock for car, except valve covers and air cleaner. (Oil pan, timing chain cover, valley pans, etc... must be stock).

B. Engine Displacement:

1) Displacement is limited by availability in production year of car.

C. Engine Block:

1) Maximum of .060" overbore.

D. Internal Changes:

1) No high performance crankshafts or harmonic balancers:
2) Windage trays shall be permitted only on cars that came with them factory stock.

E. Piston/Rods:

1) Stock replacement pistons only (flattop or dished).

F. Cylinder Heads:

1) Only head castings from 1960 to 1986 shall be permitted.
2) Head castings must match displacement as produced. No camel hump heads, or performance heads in other models.

G. Camshaft, Valve Lifters, and Rocker Arms:

1) Any flat tappet hydraulic camshaft, no roller, no solid lifter camshafts. Maximum lift .460 small block, 470 big block. Cam lift is measured at valve.
2) Valve train components must be stock as produced (valves, springs, retainers, rockers, timing components etc...).
3) Pinned or screwed in rocker arm studs, optional.
4) Double roller timing chain shall be allowed.
5) Timing chain gears shall be the single keyway type.
6) Cam button on Chevy’s shall be allowed.

H. Intake Manifold:

1) No altering of manifolds. Cast iron intakes only. (Single carburetor only. 2V or 4V only No high rise.).

I. Carburetor:

1) Carburetors must be original equipment, no after market. No center pivot Holley's. Questions on availability of carburetors should be taken up with tech official.
2) Carburetor spacer/insulators will be settled by placing a .400" limit, except Ford 1" spacer.
3) Mechanical linkage only, double return springs. No cables.

J. Air Intake: (air filter):

1) Air cleaner/filters are mandatory. K&N air filters, optional.
2) Ram Air, Cowl induction, stock hood scoops must be blocked off.

8. ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

A. Ignition System:

1) No performance (after market) ignition parts. Stock HEI distributor. Factory electronic ignitions permitted.

B. Battery:

1) Battery may be any standard or passenger car twelve volt battery.
2) Only one (1) 12 volt battery shall be permitted.
3) Must be mounted in the passenger compartment; six inches from exterior sheet metal.
4) Must be enclosed in covered box and fastened securely with metal hold down through the box.

C. Electrical Switches and Locations:

1) A labeled ON-OFF switch shall be located on the roll bar behind the driver’s seat. The switch must be wired to the battery in a manner that will cut off all electrical power to the car.

9. ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM

A. General Cooling System:

1) No antifreeze permitted!!! ($50 fine if antifreeze is confirmed).

B. Fan:

1) Electric fans OK.

C. Radiator:

1) After market aluminum radiator shall be permitted.
2) Radiator shall be mounted in stock location.
3) No auxiliary radiators. Transmission coolers may be used but mounted in a fashion so as to not endanger the driver in the event of failure.
4) Radiator protection between grill and radiator is optional but must end ahead of A-arm.

D. Overflow:

1) Radiator overflow must be connected to catch tank, with one (1) gallon minimum capacity.

10. ENGINE LUBRICATION Oil

A. Oiling System:

1) No synthetic crankcase lubricants. ($50 fine imposed if confirmed).

11. ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM

A. Exhaust Manifold:

1) Exhaust manifold shall be manufactured cast iron only. High performance, 2-1/2” exhaust manifolds and headers shall not be permitted.

B. Exhaust Pipes:

1) Exhaust system must run under car and exit behind driver's seat.

C. Mufflers:

1) Cars shall have mufflers.

12. DRIVE TRAIN

A. Clutch:

1) No aluminum clutch components, no machining to reduce weight.
2) Clutch shall be stock type fiber disc.

B. Flywheel:

1) Flywheels shall be full dimension stock as produced with original clutch cover.
2) The GM flywheel referred to as "Nodular" is not allowed.

C. Transmission:

1) Any passenger car transmission shall be allowed. All gears must work.
2) Automatic transmission must use full size stock converters.

D. Drive Shaft:

1) Drive line must be painted white for visibility.
2) A driveline strap or chain loop is required and shall be located within twelve (12) inches behind front universal.
3) Strap shall be heavy enough to contain loose driveline. Advise using a minimum of 3/16" x I" strap, attached with washered bolts. No cables.

E. Rear Axle:

1) Rear end used must be stock as produced with car. After market gears with any gear ratio shall be permitted.
2) Original equipment "posi" or "limited slip" differential are acceptable.
3) Spider gears may be welded or blocked.

F. Wheels and Lug Bolts:

1) Maximum wheel width is seven inches.
2) Maximum wheel diameter shall be 16 inches.
3) Right sides wheels, class approved only white spoke or equivalent.
4) All wheels must have center with 360 degree contact with shell. No altering of wheels, except enlargement of wheel stud holes.
5) Wheels may not measure over four inches from outside edge of rim to base of the lug stud.
6) Minimum of 1/2" stud on right side, 5/8" suggested. Suggested 1” hex nuts.

G. Tires:

1) Maximum tread width of tire is eight (8) inches.
2) Any DOT approved radial tires. No recaps.
3) No pressure relief valves.
4) Any tire may be claimed for $25 at any time during the racing night. If claimed and the car owner refuses to sell said tire, car owner and/or driver will not be able to race at Mission Valley Speedway for the period of one year.

13. FRAME REQUIREMENTS

1) Frame must match body, make to make, model to model, year to year.
2) No altering of frame to shorten, lengthen, or to allow suspension travel is permitted.

14. SUSPENSION

A. General Suspension:

1) No altering of suspension parts. All components must be mounted in stock location, using stock adjustments.

B. Front Suspensions:

1) No elongating of holes. Longer camber bolts OK. Not to exceed four (4) degrees negative camber.

C. Front Coil Springs:

1) Coil springs must be the same wire diameter and same outside diameter side to side.

D. Sway Bars (Anti-Roll Bar):

1) Original Equipment Manufacture sway bars permitted if mounted with stock components.

E. Shock Absorbers:

1) Shocks may be gas or hydraulic. No mixing.
2) One shock per wheel is required and shall be mounted in stock location and stock direction (not upside down etc…).
3) No adjustable shocks. “Load leveler" or "helper springs" must be equal side to side, no air bags. No air shocks.

F. Ground Clearance Requirements:

1) Minimum ground clearance shall be 5" measured at lowest point of frame.
2) Frame height may not exceed one inch difference left to right

G.  Height Adjusting Devices:

1) Lowering blocks and 360 deg solid non-adjustable spring spacer’s shall be permitted.
2) Horseshoe spacers, twist-in or screw-in spacers shall not be permitted.
3) Rubber wrap spring spacer shall be permitted on right side only.

15. BRAKES AND COOLING COMPONENTS

A. Brake Components:

1) Brakes in working order are required on all wheels.

16. FUEL

1) Pump gasoline only.

17. FUEL SYSTEM

A. Fuel Cell:

1) Fuel cell required and shall be in a container.
2) Maximum capacity of 12 gallons

B. Fuel Cell and Fuel Container Installation:

1) Fuel cell shall be mounted in center of trunk or box, a minimum of twelve (12) inches ahead of rear bumper. Cell is to be mounted as not to slide or shift. Suggest three (3) straps, two (2) parallel and the third (3rd) at 90 degrees to them. No plumbers tape or chains.

C. Fuel Lines:

1) Metal Fuel lines must run under the car and be securely fastened to frame or floor pan. Grommets or equivalent required where passing through trunk. Hose length shall not exceed 12" from fuel cell to line at trunk, 12” from line to pump, 6” maximum from pump to carburetor.

D. Fuel Pump:

1) Mechanical fuel pumps only.

18. PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND ROLL BARS

A. Fire Control:

1) Fire shield constructed of minimum twenty (20) gauge steel to completely separate driver from fuel tank/cell is mandatory. No tin.

B. Helmets; Head and Neck Restraint Devices:

C. Seat Belts:

1) Seat belts, harness and seat shall be attach to the roll cage or frame. Avoid attachment to floor pans without support from roll cage.

D. Seats:

1) RACE APPROVED SEAT ONLY, NO FIBERGLASS permitted.

E. Roll Bars:

1) Roll cage constructed of inch and ¾ O95 tubing.
2) Minimum 4-point perimeter design. 6-point is preferred. A vertical bar from left frame rail behind the driver, a similar bar on right frame rail and a bar across the roof connecting the vertical. This main hoop must contain a full or modified "X'. (the modified "X' allows one leg to be placed horizontal for mounting shoulder harness and seat back). A bar from the left frame rail ahead of the driver upwards toward the roof.
3) A similar bar on the right frame rail and a horizontal bar at the roof connecting these uprights. A bar connecting the left side uprights at the top and a similar bar on the right completes the 4 point cage.
4) Recommend bar connecting the forward uprights at a height not to injure drivers knees (dash bar).
5) Top halo must have a bar bisecting the area formed by four (4) uprights.
6) 6-point design is attained by adding a brace from left main hoop upright toward rear to corresponding frame rail ahead of rear axle housing and a similar bar on right. This design recommended when using modified "X".
7) Driver’s side must have three horizontal bars connecting left uprights. Two (2) bars on right door.
8) Gussets are mandatory at frame attaching points and at joints above driver’s chest and in door bars. Gussets should be 3/16" material with at least 1 1/2" weld on each leg.
9) All other bracing must be contained in perimeter of 4 point cage. Forward uprights should not contact frame ahead of frame kick-up.

F. Transmission/Clutch Shielding

1) An approved scatter shield or containment method is required on all cars.
2) Reinforced belt material is acceptable. If not placed between transmission and floor pan it should be securely attached with large diameter washers or reinforced strips.
3) Automatic cars with belting should have entire trans-hump covered. Shield should extend from firewall to transmission extension housing.

G. Steering wheel

1) A steel quick release steering wheel is optional but recommended.
2) Center of steering wheel hub must be padded acceptable to Tech Officials.

DRIVERS, CAR OWNERS AND PITMEN IN THIS CLASS SHALL OBSERVE ALL THE MISSION VALLEY AUTO RACERS GENERAL RULES.

ANY QUESTIONS ON RULES SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO HEAD TECH OFFICIAL, OR ASK AT DRIVERS MEETING!

 

                    If it doesn’t say YOU CAN…..YOU CAN”T!

 

RULES TO BE CHANGED MUST HAVE A 70% MAJORITY VOTE OF THE CLASS DRIVERS OR OWNERS THAT PARTICIPATED IN TWO OR MORE RACES AND 70% MAJORITY VOTE OF BOARD MEMBERS. If car owner or driver can’t be contacted or is contacted and doesn’t reply back to the class representative, the vote for the car would be a NO vote. Any rule changes not voted on by driver or owner will be a NO vote.

 

ONLY in the interest of SAFETY, COST and/or FAIR COMPETITION can 70% of the board of directors make a rule change if the class representative can’t get 70% of the votes from the class drivers or owners.
